Yes, a new dress is good. And go for longer rather than shorter because then people can see that you are indeed wearing clothing under your robe, rather than leaving it to the imagination. And wear normal dress-up shoes that match the robe. Having the color of the dress compliment your robe and any other insignia you may be wearing is also good.
Does anyone really need an excuse to shop for a new outfit?!? :) Not really but convocation definitely does. It isn't every day that this occurs. WooHoo!!

I totally bought a new dress. And it doesn't match the robe at all, and it's knee length.
*damn* didn't think of that.
But I still love it.
